Smoking RP's major cause of heart attack, stroke

The smoke signs are rising, but few heed the warning. Thirty-five out of 100 Filipinos (34.8%) smoke, result of the National Nutrition and Health Survey in 2003-2004 conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology showed.

Smoking is the most prevalent risk factor of cardiovascular disease including heart attack and stroke among Filipinos. It accounts for about 28,694 death in 2003, reports Dr. Antonio L. Dans, chairman of the NNHes technical committee during the recent 10th Joint Annual Convention of the Philippine Society of Hypertension, and Philippine Lipid Society at EDSA Shangrila Hotel.

The other four leading risk factor of cardiovascular disease by rank are hypertension, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes blamed for the deaths of an estimated 14,015; 8,046; 5,730; and 4,148 persons respectively.

An end to smoking is now considered a global concern. A third of the world's total male population smokes. According to World Health Organization, there was a significant increase in smokers in developing countries. The numbe expands by as much as 3.4% per year.

In the Philippines, inspite the Department of Health's and other medical organization's anti-smoking campaign, more than half (56.3%) of adult males are still smoking. Prevalence in adult male smokers even increased from 53.8% in 1998 to 56.3% during the survey. Prevalence in adult female smokers went slightly down from 12.6% to 12.1%.

Dr. Dante D. Morales, former president of the Philippine Heart Association and NNHeS overall chairman reported that Filipinos are smoking more compared to Singaporeans (24.2%) and Americans (24.1%). Nicotine, the deadly and most known content of cigarette causes heart enlargement that makes a person more at risk of CVD and other atherosclerotic disease.

The medical comunity clamors for a more comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to smoking control and prevention. The NNHeS was funded by DOH, PSH, PSL, Philippine Heart Association, Philippine Diabetes Association, and 10 other medical specialty organizations.
